Zeolite catalysts play a critical role in many biomass conversion processes. For example, ZSM-5, has been successfully used in catalytic fast pyrolysis and bio-oil upgrading processes to form gasoline range aromatics from highly oxygenated renewable feedstocks. The dehydration and isomerization of sugars have also been accomplished with zeolytic catalysts. These backbone catalysts of the petrochemical indutry are due for a new life in biorefineries and this article presents an overview of the potential role that zeolite catalysts will play in different biomass conversion reactions.
